The 334 Symposia

Under the sponsorship of the University Grants Committee (UGC), the Heads of Universities Committee (HUCOM) is organizing a series of twelve symposia, with the eight UGC-funded institutions taking turns to host or co-host symposia from late 2008 to 2011. These symposia aim to promote exchange and information sharing among stakeholders on the preparation and implementation of the new 334 academic reform, and to identify and stimulate discussions on important issues pertaining to 334.

The 8th Symposium on Standards Based Assessment and Honours Classification

The Symposium aims to provide a forum for UGC-funded institutions to identify and deliberate key issues relating to standards based assessment and honours classification in the context of the development and implementation of the new 4-year undergraduate curriculum.

Topics

Two renowned scholars will deliver keynote presentations on standards based assessment and honours classification respectively.

Representatives from UGC-funded institutions will be invited in a plenary panel discussion to respond to the issues raised in the two keynote speeches and to reflect on the way forward for the assessment and reporting of undergraduate student learning experiences in Hong Kong.

A second plenary panel discussion will engage representatives from several employers’ groups in commenting on how they perceive, interpret and use honours classification and Grade Point Averages (GPAs) as indicators of student achievement.

Members of local institutions will also have the opportunity to share their views and experiences on key issues regarding assessment during three parallel discussion sessions.
